At least 244 elephants killed in last three years

New Delhi: After tigers and lions, it's the turn of elephants now. In the last three years at least 244 jumbos were killed in the country, with around half of them falling to poachers.
Minister of Environment and Forests D. Raja informed parliament yesterday the elephants "were killed due to poaching, electrocution, man-animal conflict and mining related activities in the last three years".
Elephants are included in the Wildlife [Protection] Act 1972, which puts them on the protected category.
In 2003-04, poachers killed 53 elephants, they killed 25 the following year and 39 in 2005-06. Similarly, 52 jumbos were electrocuted in 2003-04, 54 in 2004-05 and 12 in 2005-06.
Man-elephant conflict has claimed the lives of seven elephants in the last three years and two were killed as a result of mining related activities in 2005-06.
