Elephants menace back to haunt villagers

Pathhalgaon, Chhattisgarh, May 18: With breaking up of battery-run electric wires, put up to prevent wild elephants from wreaking havoc in 20-25 villages near tribal-dominated Badalkhol sanctuary, the tusker menace has come to haunt again.

Last year, the Jashpur forest division had laid a cordon of electric wires in an area of about 81 km to prevent pachyderms entering into the area.

Forest department sources said the elephants received powerful electric shock whenever they attempted to venture out of the forest.

The tactic had been proved quite useful in restricting their movement.
