NEW DELHI, July 6: The results of the five-yearly elephant census are pouring in and, unlike the tiger census results, project elephant officials are all smiles as the animal population is on the rise.
Mr AN Prasad, inspector general of forests and director, project elephant, ministry of environments and forests, said, “The elephant population has always been increasing but, in recent years, it has shown an amazing upward trend.”
The five-yearly census has covered 15 states comprehensively. Among these, two states, Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh, have submitted their results. “In the last census of 2002, Andhra Pradesh had 17 elephants but now the number has risen to 28. Chattisgarh, which had no elephants according to the 2002 census, now has 122,” said Mr Prasad.
