Jashpurnagar (Chhattisgarh), July 18: Driven to desperation by the frequent intrusion of elephants from forest areas in Jharkhand and Orissa, residents of over 100 villages in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur District are having sleepless nights over fears of another jumbo attack.

Another 32 villages in Raigarh, Sarguja and Korba Districts are also at the mercy of these marauding pachyderms.

Irrespective of day or night, these elephants tend to storm villages and catch villagers off guard.

This has been a persistent menace for the past decade.According to the Range Forest Officer of Jashpur, Devashish Banerjee, elephants get infuriated when villagers try to tease them or make them run away.

"Excited villagers tease and annoy them. Naturally, they create more of menace. We have given special training to some people here, including our staff members from the Forest Department, regarding monitoring of the movement of elephants. They ask the villagers not to disturb the elephants," said Banerjee.
