PERNEM, JULY 31 — The Forest Department has failed to drive out the elephants, which have strayed into the State, to Maharashtra as the four tuskers are still seen around Khutwal village of Pernem taluka, destroying paddy fields and plantation.
A small group of men, using firecrackers, drums and other percussion instruments, have been trying to drive out the animals without any success, for the last four days.
The tuskers were spotted at Sindhudurg before they entered the State after crossing Terekhol River at Torsem village. They later moved to Mopa and are roaming around Khutwal for the past four days.
At Torsem they destroyed banana plantation and at Hasapur and Khutwal a compound wall and a number of paddy fields.
Meanwhile, residents of Hasapur, Hankhane, Khutwal and Akorna have urged the authorities to immediately drive out the animals. Responding to their demand, five platoons of armed forest guards including locals have been deployed at Khatval to drive out the elephants back to Maharashtra
