Elephant population dips in Karnataka

BANGALORE: Karnataka hosts a healthy population of the gentle giants. That's the finding of the agency which recently conducted a study of the elephant population in the state.

The census carried out by the state forest department in May deduced that Karnataka has an estimated elephant population of 4,035. This is less than the 4347 in the 2005 census.

Experts state that this is not a cause for worry, for the numbers tend to vary as elephants migrate from one state to another continuously. Also, this figure is considerably low when compared to 5,800 elephants estimated during the 2002 census.

The Asian Nature Conservation Foundation (ANCF), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) did the study. Here, sample block counting, line transects count, waterhole count and block count methods were adopted. The census was carried out in 23 forest divisions, where ANCF, using densities, calculated the number of elephants sighted and divided it by the total population in all divisions.
