Rogue elephants continue to wreak havoc in north coastal Andhra Pradesh bordering Orissa, killing one more person on Sunday, taking the toll to eight since last week.

The tuskers, which entered from neighbouring Orissa, trampled one tribal to death in Srikakulam district, about 600 kms from Hyderabad.

Forest officials said the tusker menace has so far claimed 17 lives since Aug 13, when the first attack was reported in the district.

The pachyderms killed a scribe of a vernacular daily on Friday in Srikakulam district when he went into the forests along with a group of journalists to film the rogue elephants.

About a dozen elephants continue to prowl in the forest areas, felling trees and damaging standing crops. This has caused panic among tribals, many of whom were fleeing their homes.

Officials have also evacuated nine tribal areas and put the villagers in schoolbuildings.
