Bhubaneswar, Oct 28: Two of the elephants from the herd that had strayed into neighbouring Andhra Pradesh were brought back and released in Lakhari forests in Gajapati district of Orissa on Sunday evening.
The two rogue pachyderms were tranquilised in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday and brought back to Gajapati loaded in two separate trucks.
The elephants were released inside the Lakhari forest at 5-30 pm in the presence of senior officials from the district administration, forest department and wildlife experts.
The remaining seven elephants that formed part of the herd will be brought to Lakhari in a similar way over the next four days, according to Gunanidhi Jena, Additional District Magistrate of Gajapati.
These elephants from Lakhari forests had come out their habitat several months ago. They killed six persons in neighbouring areas in Orissa before they strayed in Andhra Pradesh a few weeks ago.
The herd killed at least 10 persons in Andhra Pradesh creating fear in the minds of the villagers in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts, thereby forcing the Andhra Pradesh government to make arrangements for bringing them back to their habitat.
