Bhubaneswar, Nov. 19: At least 26 elephants have been killed by poachers and angry villagers in Orissa since 2005.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, replying to question in the Orissa Legislative Assembly, on Monday said that nine elephants were killed during 2005-06 while 16 were shot down in 2006-07.
One elephant has reportedly been killed this year, the chief minister said. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik said that some preventive steps had been taken to provide safety to the pachyderms.
"Anti-poaching squad comprising forest department staff and daily wage staff have been formed and deployed to take up regular patrolling. Besides, elephant trackers are engaged for continuous monitoring of the animal and the tracking of the poachers. Water bodies have been created in the forest areas to provide sufficient water during summer, so that, the elephants will not go out of the forest area," the CM told the House. Mr Patnaik also stated that in case of human death or damage to property by elephants, compassionate payments were made quickly so as to avoid revenge killing.
