The saga of fight between the wild and human beings in Kodagu district seems to be unending.
Over the last 10 years this fight has claimed 60 lives, 8,126 crop loss cases have been filed and government has given a sum of Rs 1,85,54,640 as relief amount in total.
Madikeri Forest Sub Division has witnessed the intense quest for survival or fight for life between the wild animals, especially the wild elephants and human beings. One major reason for this fight is said to be the sharp raise in the population of wild elephants and increased human settlement in forest areas, clearing of the woods. With the shrinking forest, these elephants are facing problems in searching food and water which compel them to reach out to the villages in herds and create havoc there, destroying property and crops.
