Elephants are in danger in their natural habitat — Jharkhand. The death of three elephants in two separate places within a week is the latest example of the confrontation of mammoths with human beings.
There was a time when elephants and human beings lived in harmony, but the goliaths started venturing into human habitats after the forests were encroached and their corridors were destroyed. The surge in Maoist activities also forced elephants to come out of jungles, as gunshots and explosive blasts in their training camps terrorised the normally peaceful mammals. The confrontation between elephants and human beings are now causing harm to each other.
Recently, an elephant, which had separated from its herd over a year ago, was finally shot down by the security forces in Bokaro district. Notorious as Laden, it had trampled 11 villagers to death and injured 22 in the state in last two months. Laden was also blamed for the killing of six people in Purulia district of West Bengal on May 21, provoking the neighbouring state to declare it as rogue.
