BICHOLIM A herd of four elephants from Goa - Maharashtra border which have been camping at Hansarpur, Ibrampur and Khutwal villages in Pernem taluka for last 20 days, have came down to Sal village in Bicholim taluka a couple of days ago and are wrecking havoc.
"They have damaged fields and banana plantations at Khalchawada, Sal causing loss to farmers," informed one of the property owners from Sal, Mr Daulatrav Rane.
The tuskers have damaged banana plantation belonging to Mr Ankush Raut and Mr Surendra Raut. The elephants have moved to Sal from Dhumase and are presently in the hilly area of Vadaval village.
However, the department has asked farmers and villagers to remain alert and adopt some measures like using fire crackers, beating drums, etc inorder to make a loud noise so that the elephants do not enter human populated areas. "As soon as the weather conditions become favourable, the operation of driving the tuskers away from the villages to the borders will be undertaken without any delay," assured the forest officer.
