Elephant calf rescued from well in Kochi

KOCHI: Residents and forest officials rescued an elephant calf that fell into an abandoned well at Urulanthanni near Thattekkad early on Thursday.

The two-year-old calf had fallen into the well that was less than 2m deep while it was moving in a farmland along a branch of the Periyar.

The elephant herd had crossed the river from the nearby teak plantation to enter the farmland. Residents gathered around the well after hearing the cries of the elephant calf.

The herd retreated to the other side of the river (crossing around 50m) and camped over there as residents launched a rescue operation. But, it was not an easy task as the panicked elephant kept on moving around inside the well. Then, an earth-mover was brought later in the morning and the side of the well was knocked to help the calf climb out. Around 8am the calf was rescued.

The herd, which was camping across the river, rushed towards the other side seeing the elephant calf, which moved on to join the herd. The rest of the herd too was stressed; the elephants had kept their tail raised. One of the elephant turned towards the crowd and raised its trunk thrice as if it was 'thanking' the crowd.

However, wildlife expert Dr Arun Zacharia said that the elephant was catching scent to detect a possible threat.

"Elephants usually keep their tail raised when they are stressed. They mainly raise their trunk to catch various scents and detect possible threats," he said.
