Injured elephant enters fields in Mettupalayam

Coimbatore: An injured male elephant had on Sunday night entered banana plantations at Samayapuram village at Mettupalayam. Villagers said they spotted the blood on banana leaves and on the ground. They said the elephant had not damaged the crops. Early on Monday, the elephant had entered the forest nearby, they said. Forest officials said they have formed three teams to monitor the elephant's movements.
A forest official said the elephant had an injury near its ear, which meant it would have been injured in a fight with another male. “Bleeding had stopped. But there were traces of blood as it had walked past trees and fields in the region,” said the official.

“We tried to trace the elephant, but it went deep into the forest. So, we have formed three special teams who have been trying to trace it,” the official said. As the elephant had walked deep into the forest without getting fatigued, the official said, it would be healthy. “But we are waiting for it to come out so that we can have a look at its injury and take further action,” the official added.
