Elephant Calf Falls To Death

A five-month-old female elephant calf fell to death in Cumbum east range of the Meghamalai Forest Range in Theni district on Friday.

The carcass of the elephant calf was found on Friday by the officials of the Forest Department around 6 p.m in the Surulipatti north beat. The location is said to be close to Kailasanathar cave.

D. Dinesh, Forest Range Officer (Cumbum east), said the elephant was said to be grazing on the field along with its mother. “It has been raining heavily for the last two days, making the ground very slippery. The calf may have wandered close to the mother, but slipped into a 10-foot ditch and broke its spinal cord. It also twisted its neck,” he said.

He added that the elephant died on the spot. Since the carcass was spotted in the evening, forest officials could not act immediately and perform the post-mortem. On Saturday, the corpse was autopsied by forest veterinary surgeon K. Selvam from Narayanadevanpatti. The remains were later buried nearby, said Mr. Dinesh.
