Forest workers get trained in monitoring wild elephants
Erode: World Wildlife Fund (WWF) organized a one-day training programme for forest field workers at Bannari here Wednesday to provide hands-on training to on monitoring elephant movements during summer season.
“We have insisted the workers to fill water in dry waterbodies in the forest area,” D Boominathan, coordinator of WWF, said.
“The workers were directed to submit a report twice a week to the forest department about elephants movements and information on water levels in the waterbodies in the forest area,” he said.
During summer, waterbodies in the forest area get dried quickly. While small animals such as deer, tiger and leopard would drink water available in the waterbodies, big animals like elephants would suffer due to insufficient water,” Boominathan said.
“Elephants also get ailments such as ringworms and intestinal-related issues when they drink contaminated water,” he said.
