Number of elephants go up in Satkosia

ANGUL, May 11: The elephant population in Satkosia wild life sanctuary, a part of Mahanadi Elephant Reserve, has gone up within a span of two years, according to the just concluded census conducted in the area.
According a reliable source, there are 145 elephants in the sanctuary area now as against 98 found in 2005 special census. The elephant population in 2002 in this part was 155.
Under the guidance of Satkosia wildlife divisional forest officer Mr Susanta Kumar Nanda, an 18-member non-governmental team, including honorary wildlife warden Mr Prasanna Kumar Behera conducted the census operation for three days commencing 8 March.
Out of these, there are 15 tuskers, 88 females and remaining are calves. The census group found heavy concentration of elephants in Tikarpara area where there area.
