Trenches bar tusker entry to Maharashtra

PANAJI: Goa's forest department is likely to seek the centre's intervention and put the ball in its court after yet another attempt to push the elephants into Maharashtra failed and they came face to face with the harsh reality.

Goa is planning to write to the director, Project Elephant in the ministry of environment and forest seeking its intervention and pointing out that Goa is not a natural habitat for elephants.

Though a state-level co-ordination committee headed by DCF Dandeli, and involving officials from Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra is in place to find a solution to the problem of pachyderms, the officials have realised that their Maharashtra counterparts are running with the hares and hunting with the hounds. "They are telling us one thing and doing something else," a forest department source told TOI.
