Yala village under wild elephant threat

YALA, 11th May 2018 (NNT) - Wild elephants have invaded a village in the southernmost province of Yala and destroyed fruit plantations belonging to the villagers.

Community leaders and residents of the Ban Tangkadeng village in Tham Thalu subdistrict are working on ways to drive back wild elephants that have been wandering around the Thai - Malaysia border area to forage for food.

A resident, Sunee Wanna said wild elephants had been around the village for several days but nobody dared to push them back into the forest, adding her fruit orchards had been badly damaged by the hungry jumbos.

In Khiri Khet subdistrict, villagers had earlier made salt licks close to the forest to prevent wild elephants from invading their neighborhoods. Their attempt however had failed to stop the elephants' invasion.

Abbot of Wat Si Nakhon, Phra Samutphisit Analyo alongside defense volunteers videoed today's incident in a bid to observe the elephants' behavior to develop a better plan to deal with them.
