Elephant calf rescued in Kerala
KOCHI: An elephant calf, which accidentally fell into a 12-ft-deep well at
Manikandanchal near Kothamangalam in the early hours of Thursday, was
rescued by Kuttampuzha forest officials and residents.
The one-year-old elephant was rescued after a three-hour-long effort, said
a forest official.
"Though we were alerted by nearby residents, we could not reach the well
as the herd stood there till 8am. Later, when the herd moved to forest, we
dug one side of the well and created a sloppy path using a bulldozer and
the calf managed to come out around 11.30am. The calf, which suffered
minor injuries, was later sent back to the forest where it rejoined with the
herd," said Kuttampuzha forest range officer R Rajan.
