Forest Dept. treats dehydrated elephant

The Forest Department on Sunday treated a dehydrated one-year-old baby elephant, which got separated from a herd of elephants that visited a stream of the Payaswini river near Basmadka in Sullia on Saturday. A group of eight elephants from the Medinadka Reserve Forest was found by the streamside on Saturday. Except for the one-year-old calf, the remaining elephants left for the forest on Sunday morning.

A team of forest officials went to the stream and found the calf weak following dehydration. Veterinarian Venkatachalapathy consulted department’s elephant experts in Nagarahole and Sakrebailu elephant camps and treated the calf.

said that the calf had recovered and has now been left by the river side to join the remaining elephants.

If the calf does not join the herd on Monday, he will consult higher-ups to relocate the calf, Mr.

Jumbo herd leave behind dehydrated calf in Sullia

Mangaluru: A herd of wild elephants from a nearby reserve forest have sneaked into villages of Sullia taluk, triggering panic among locals in the area.A herd of eight elephants have made their way to the bank of the Payaswini river near Basmadaka in Sullia taluk, about 90 kilometres from here.

According to locals, the elephants have appeared after a gap of two years.

They say the elephants may have come from the Medinadka reserve forest.Meanwhile, forest officials are making desperate attempts to chase the elephants back into the jungle.

Officials say that elephants entered human habitat three days ago.

The herd consist of five calves.

Eight elephants died of poisoning in Assam in 2018: Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma

Eight elephants had been killed by poisoning in the State this year, State Environment and Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma informed the Assembly on Thursday while presenting the data on man-elephant conflict.

This was six more than the number of elephants killed in 2016-17, according to the Minister.

Patches of paddy fields drenched with common pesticides claimed 26 jumbos in Sonitpur district in 2002 – but wildlife activists have found a fairly new method of killing the animals by poisoning rice beer or fermented rice for producing liquor.

Many villages in Assam use rice to make liquor, for which the State government wants geographical indication tag. Elephants that raid villages are known to develop a taste for this liquor.
