Wild elephants trample elderly woman to death in Nilgirs



Udhagamandalam: An 83-year-old woman was trampled to death by wild elephants near Nadugani in Gudalur taluk in the Nilgiris on Thursday when she was going to the toilet located outside her house.

The deceased was identified as K Chinnakaruppaye, 83, of Amaikulam. “She came out of her house around 6.30am to go to the toilet located outside it. Two female elephants roaming there attacked her and she died on the spot,” said P K Dileep, district forest officer, Gudalur division.

The body was sent to the Gudalur government hospital for postmortem. After the autopsy, the body was handed over to her family members.

“An initial compensation of 50, 000 was handed over to the family members of the deceased. After procedural formalities, the remaining 2.50 lakh will be issued to them,” Dileep said.

Meanwhile, the elephants were chased away from the residential locality. “We are monitoring the movement of elephants to avoid further casualty,” the forest official said.

Elephant tramples 2 to death in Odisha, India



Two elderly persons, including a woman, were trampled to death by an elephant at Makarkenda village in Rairakhol of Sambalpur district on Friday night.

The deceased have been identified as Sambhu Bhoi (65) and Daimati Bhoi (70).

After getting information about the presence of a herd of elephants in the area, Daimati had gone to the house of Sambhu to sleep yesterday. Daimati, who had a poor vision, was attacked by an elephant after she came out of the house. Later, the pachyderm entered into the house and trampled Sambhu to death while he was sleeping.

Sources said, villagers are having sleepless night as a herd of elephants has been camping in the area for last few days.

On receiving information about the elephant attack, forest officials reached the spot and started investigation.

In a separate incident, the carcass of a baby elephant was found in a paddy field at Baincha village under Betanati Forest Range in Mayurbhanj district today.

The elephant is expected to be around five-years-old while the exact reason behind its death is yet to be ascertained. Locals said around six elephants were spotted near the village last night.

Sources said more than 40 elephants from Jharkhand have entered Odisha via West Bengal border and camping in separate groups in forest areas under Rasgovindpur and Deuli Forest Ranges.

Elephant kills woman in Odisha



Dhenkanal (Odisha), Apr 21 (PTI) A woman was trampled to death by an elephant at Kauriapal village in Dhenkanal district today, a forest official said.

The woman had gone to the forest under sadar forest range area when she was attacked and killed by the pachyderm, Forest Ranger Darsania Bhoi said.

The deceased was identified as Satyabhama (60), he said adding that the forest department has provided an amount of Rs 10,000 as immediate assistance to the family of the woman and compensation would be given as per guidelines.

Local residents alleged that elephant attacks had been on the rise in the district and sought steps to protect people from the jumbo menace.

Woman trampled to death by wild tusker in Dhenkanal



Dhenkanal: In a fresh incident of elephant attack in the state, an elderly woman was trampled to death by a jumbo in Kaunriapala village under Sadar Forest Range in the district on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Satyabati Swain (65).

Satyabati, who was homeless and living in a temple located in the village, was out to attend nature’s call, when the wild tusker attacked her. She died on the spot after the animal lifted her with its trunk and threw to a distance.

Police have reached the spot and rushed the body for postmortem.

The incident left residents in the village in a state of panic. They feared that the jumbo might have gone aggressive due to a train accident recently in which it sustained hind leg injury.

At least six elephant attack incidents have been reported in the Sadar Range in last 10 days, which speak volume of the elephant menace in the area.
