Cow elephant dies after collision with lorry in Kota Tinggi

JOHOR BARU: A wild cow elephant died after it was hit by a lorry at Batu 13 Jalan Mersing-Kota Tinggi, near the Panti Forest Reserve near Kota Tinggi early today.

Director of the Johor Department of Wildlife, Jamalun Nasir Ibrahim, said the department was informed of the incident which occurred at about 2am by the lorry driver.

He said based on early information obtained of the incident, it was believed to have occurred after the lorry driver, who was travelling from Kota Tinggi to Mersing, suddenly switched on the high beam headlights when he came across a herd of four elephants crossing the road from the direction of an estate near the forest reserve.

“One of the elephants was startled and turned back towards the estate and was hit by a lorry which was travelling from Terengganu to Singapore.

“Following the collision, the elephant which was less than 10 years old, died at the scene due to serious injuries to the head,” Jamalun Nasir said when contacted today.

He said the department had moved the carcass of the elephant from the scene and buried it.

He advised all drivers not to provoke animals in the area by honking and turning on the high beam lights to not startle or provoke them. Meanwhile, Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Supt Ahsmon Bajah, when contacted, confirmed receiving a report of the incident. and said the lorry driver did not suffer any injuries.

Wild elephant dies of intestinal worms

A 25-year-old female elephant was found dead at Athanithumukkal forest area in Andhiyur forest division in Erode district on Tuesday. According to forest officials, the elephant died of intestinal worms.

“The elephant had been suffering from intestinal worms and it had stopped eating. Subsequently, its health had deteriorated,” said a forest official.

Earlier in the day, local residents spotted the carcass and alerted the forest officials. Veterinarians attached to the district forest office were brought to perform the autopsy.

“It is normal for elephants to have roundworms in intestines. But when the situation aggravates, elephants stop taking food,” said a forest veterinarian.

After the postmortem, the carcass was buried in the forest.

Elephant calf found dead in Andhiyur

Erode: A three-month-old female elephant calf was found dead in Thanakkumaduvu area in Andhiyur forest in Erode district on Thursday. Forest department officials and veterinary doctors confirmed that the calf died due to parasitic infection.
Andhiyur forest officials had spotted the carcass during a routine patrol. A team of veterinarians also arrived at the place after the officials informed them. However, they could not approach it as the mother elephant was guarding the carcass. They beat drums and blasted crackers to chase the mother away into the deep forest.

The veterinarians performed an autopsy on the spot and buried the carcass in the forest itself. “We suspect the calf was suffering from intestinal worms and thus stopped eating,” said a forest official. tnn

20-year-old elephant found dead

Erode: A 20-year-old female elephant was found dead in an elephant proof trench near Sathyamangalam forest here on Monday evening.

According to forest officials, the elephant and its three-year-old calf were roaming at Pavalakkuttai village near Sathyamangalam forest. “They tried to enter into an agriculture field. But the mother elephant fell into the elephant proof trench, which was dug to prevent elephants from entering into human habitat, and sustained injuries. The elephant was already suffering from intestinal worms,” said a forest officer.

The farm owner, M Badrinath, 41, informed the forest department. “The elephant could not come out and died on the spot,” said the officer.

The carcass was taken out of the pit on Monday evening. But due to bad light, the postmortem was conducted only on Tuesday morning. The carcass was later buried inside the forest.

Meanwhile, when the carcass was brought up on Monday evening, the calf refused to move away from the mother and jabbed it with the trunk. The officials, at last, chased the calf away into the forest.

Two female elephants found dead in Erode district

Erode(TN), Mar 27 Two female elephants were found dead in Kadambur forest area in the district, forest officials said today.

While carrying out routine patrol duty last evening in Pavazhakuttai area within Kadambur forest division, a team of forest officials found an elephant lying dead in a trench.

After scaring away its calf, which was standing nearby they examined the dead elephant.

They said it was about 20 year old female elephant and had died due to illness.

Similarly, the carcass of another female elephant aged about 25 years was found in the forest division by some forest personnel on patrol duty in Anpur forest area within Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR).

The veterinary doctor examined the dead pachyderm and said it had died due to illness.

Carcasses of the elephants were buried in the forest area.

Elephant dies of lung infection

A nine-year-old makna, a male elephant without tusks, was found dead in Singara range of forests in the Nilgiris on Thursday, allegedly due to lung infection.
The carcass of the elephant was found in a private land at Bokkapuram. “The carcass might be a day old,” said forest range officer Kanthan.

Government veterinarian attached to Gudalur taluk performed the postmortem operation and the preliminary autopsy report suggested that the animal had breathing difficulties as it had been suffering from lung infection. “Samples of vital organs have been collected for lab test,” the official said.

Later, the carcass was buried inside the forest area.
