1 killed, 1 critical in jumbo attack in Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: Adding to the spate in the cases of elephant attack in the state, wild pachyderms killed one person and left another critical in separate incidents under Hindol Forest Range in Dhenkanal district last night.

In the first instance, an elderly man identified as Prasanna Behera was trampled to death in Tentulisingha village under Kamakhyanagar police limits in the district. Behera was returning to his home last night while a tusker which had sneaked into the village in search of food pounced on him. He died on the spot.

In a similar incident in Kalinga village under Hindol Tehsil, another elderly man was badly injured in the attack of a wild tusker. Identified as Suresh Chandra Pal, the victim was on his way to farmland when the jumbo lifted him with its trunk and threw to a distance.

Pal has been admitted to a nearby hospital and his condition is stated to be critical.

A report of elephant incursion has also been received from Bankitia village under Rasol Tehsil in the district where a wild tusker overturned a tractor and spread panic in the area for hours this morning.

Forest officials have been rushed to the places where elephant attacks have taken place and taking stock of the situation.

Elephant Kills 55-Yr-Old Man In Cuttack

Cuttack: A 55-year-old man was attacked and killed by a wild tusker at Narasinghpur block here on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Binod Barada, a resident of Khairipanga village in Baramba block.

According to sources, the incident occurred when Binod along with two of his friends went to Taila village early in the morning to pluck cashew from a garden. The trio came across the tusker which had sneaked into the garden. Irate over the rising incidents of elephant attacks, locals detained officials of the forest department after they reached to the spot to take stock of the situation. The villagers demanded compensation for the deceased’s family.

Woman trampled to death by wild tusker in Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: In a fresh incident of elephant attack in the state, an elderly woman was trampled to death by a jumbo in Kaunriapala village under Sadar Forest Range in the district on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Satyabati Swain (65).

Satyabati, who was homeless and living in a temple located in the village, was out to attend nature’s call, when the wild tusker attacked her. She died on the spot after the animal lifted her with its trunk and threw to a distance.

Police have reached the spot and rushed the body for postmortem.

The incident left residents in the village in a state of panic. They feared that the jumbo might have gone aggressive due to a train accident recently in which it sustained hind leg injury.

At least six elephant attack incidents have been reported in the Sadar Range in last 10 days, which speak volume of the elephant menace in the area.

Tusker kills 3 people in as many days

Apr 16, 2018-An adult male elephant at Parsa National Park (PNP) has killed three persons in the last three days. Just two days after killing Sadhu Kamalesh Giri on Thursday, the wild tusker attacked and killed Saga Bahadur Dong and Manmohan Dhakal on Saturday.


Haribhadra Acharya, the park’s chief conservation officer, said the elephant has been wandering around Rambhauribhatha area for the past few weeks.

Sadhu Kamalesh, who was living in the forest for meditation, was killed on Thursday morning. His body was discovered on Friday.

Dong, a resident of Thori-4, Parsa, and Dhakal, who hailed from Manahari, Makwanpur, were attacked as they were visiting a fair on the New Year’s day.

They were riding pillions on motorcycles driven by their friends, both of whom survived the incident.

Acharya said the four friends were travelling through the route that is not guarded by the Nepal Army soldiers.

The incident would not have happened had they taken the safer route via Charbhaiya Post, he added.

Conservationists said the elephant might have become violent due to the noise made by vehicles travelling through the forest route to reach the fair site.

Thousands of people take the forest route to attend the fair that is held every New Year’s Day. Acharya said the park authority had alerted the fair organisers about the risk of wildlife attacks after Sadhu Kamalesh was killed on Thursday.

Shepherd injured in elephant attack

A 78 year-old Shepherd was injured when a wild tusker attacked him at Sakaleshpur town in this district on Monday night.

Forest officials said on Tuesday that the elephant was first spotted near Achangi on the outskirts of the town where it attacked Balanna, hailing from Hiriyur in Chitradurga District.

The elephant moved to Santeveri locality after crossing the Hemavati River. It moved close to the Veterinary Hospital on B M Road (NH 75) and turned towards Maheshwari Extension. Later in the night, the tusker was spotted in a farmland. As the animal took a stroll in the town, the residents were in shock and many watched from their terraces.

Officers of the Forest Department attempted to drive the elephant away from the town limits.

Balanna, who suffered injuries in the attack, is being treated at Sakaleshpur Taluk Hospital. He had come to Sakaleshpur with a herd of sheep.

Sakaleshpur and Alur taluks are known for elephant menace. More than 50 people have died in elephant attacks in the last 10 years.
