Hungry elephant CHARGES vacationers on safari after rising from bushes

TOURISTS shrieked in terror as a hungry elephant charged a safari buggy.

The frightening moment the huge animal emerged from bushes and ran at the holidaymakers was caught on film.

In the clip, it is seen slowly walking up the jungle bank before spotting the safari buggy and charging it.

The wild tusker was believed to be on the hunt for food at the time.

Tourists in a nearby vehicle are heard screaming and whaling, “Oh my God” as the elephant stomps along the road in Jalpaiguri district, North India.

Nervous bikers attempt to drive the beast away, but in a state of panic their vehicle falls to the ground.

Seconds later the driver manages to pick up the bike up and scoot off with the elephant just feet away.

He was left with minor injuries. No tourists were injured.

Encounters between wildlife and tourists have become quite common in Indi, where the animals come out in search of food.

Assam: Wild Elephant Dies of Electrocution in Karbi Anglong, Power Department Accused of Negligence

Bokajan: Another case of electrocution of elephants has come to the fore, this time, from Assam. A wild tusker was electrocuted in Nambar Nadi tea estate in Bokajan on Friday after it came in contact with a live high voltage electric wire. Residents in the vicinity spotted the lifeless body of the elephant and immediately intimated the forest officials and the police. Locals have alleged that negligence on the part of the power department led to the death of the elephant.

In the recent past, a number of cases of elephant deaths by electrocution have been reported in the country. An elephant was electrocuted to death on Thursday after coming in contact with an 11kv electric line in Mayurbhanj's Sansarasposi village in Odisha on Thursday, just over two weeks after seven elephants died after coming in contact with non-rectification of sagging lines and non-cabling of transmission lines in another district in the state.
Data from the environment ministry shows that 655 elephant deaths took place in India from 2009 to 2017. The reasons for the death of tuskers include electrocution, train accidents, poaching, and poisoning.

The death of the pachyderm has unnerved animal lovers in the state. It is worthwhile to mention here that a jumbo was electrocuted to death after the animal came in contact with an 11kv electric line in Sansaraposi village in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha on Thursday.

Seven pachyderms were electrocuted a fortnight ago after they came in contact with precariously hanging high tension electric lines at Kamalanga village in Dhenkanal district. Official sources said 655 elephants were killed in India from 2009 to 2017. Apart from electrocution, other reasons for the death of tuskers include train accidents, poaching, and poisoning.

Dasara elephant, guards escape electrocution

MYSURU: Dasara elephant Gopalaswamy had a narrow escape from
being electrocuted as the truck ferrying him rammed an electric pole on

Tuesday night. Though the electric wire fell on him and the truck, the fuse
blew out, cutting off power supply, and averted a major tragedy.

The incident occurred at 10pm in Kolavige, Nagarahole Tiger Reserve.

Gopalaswamy and two other elephants from Mathigodu camp were being
ferried in separate trucks to Sakleshpur, Hassan, to capture a wild tusker.

The elephants were accompanied by their mahouts and kavadis in the
trucks. Deputy conservator of forest (wildlife) Siddaramappa told TOI that
that animals were transported at night to avoid traffic and heat.

Wild tusker kills nine year old boy in Odisha

A nine-year-old boy was trampled to death, while his mother and infant sister were seriously injured by a wild tusker in Odisha's Keonjhar district, police said today.

The incident happened yesterday at Khuntakata village under the jurisdiction of Bansapal police station, the police said.

The jumbo stormed into the victim's house late last night and trampled the boy to death when his mother was trying to escape with both the children, police said.

While the 9-year-old boy was killed on the spot, his mother and five-month-old sister received serious injuries, a police officer said.

They were admitted to a hospital at Bansapal initially, he said, adding, after some time they were shifted to the district headquarters hospital here since their condition deteriorated.

Irate villagers staged a road blockade for some time and demanded that concrete steps should be taken to save the locals from elephant attacks, the officer said.

The villagers also demanded adequate compensation for the family of the deceased, the officer added.

The blockade was lifted after assurance from the officials, he said.

Elephant tramples man to death in Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: In yet another incident of pachyderm attack in the state, a man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Gengutia village under Dhenkanal Sadar Tehsil on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Sushant Behera, a labourer by profession and a resident of the same village.

The victim was on his way to work in Dhenkanal Town riding a bicycle when came across a wild tusker which has sneaked into the village last night. The jumbo pounced on the victim and trampled him to death on the spot.

Some bystanders who witnessed the incident called up the victim’s family and informed about his death.

Tension engulfed the village following the incident as villagers blocked the Dhenkanal-Kamakhyanagar Road protesting the growing incidents of elephant incursion into the area and blamed Forest Department’s negligence for it.

Police and forest officials reached the spot and pacified the angry locals with assurance of compensation to the family of the victim later in the day.

Growing elephant attacks in Kamakhyanagar, Odapada and Dhenkanal blocks in past few months has left people in these areas in a state of panic.

Jumbo kills shepherd woman in Krishnagiri

Krishnagiri: A wild jumbo killed a 50-year-old shepherd woman who entered the reserved forest for cattle grazing in Krishnagiri district on Sunday.

Police said, S. Madhamma of Ethakenaru village, near Natrampalayam along Hosur-Hogenakkal road of Denkannikottai taluk, was trampled to death by a wild tusker. The tragic incident occurred early today when the woman entered the forest region with her livestock.She was tending the cattle into the forest area for grazing. However, Madhamma, ignorant of an elephant hiding in a nearby bush, was caught off-guard by its trunk and grotesquely trampled to death .

Tusker kills one; elephant-man face off toll touches four in five days

Dhenkanal, April 14: In yet another incident of man-elephant conflict in the State, a man was trampled to death by a wild pachyderm in Gaudakateni village under Odapada block in the district Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Govind Chandra Bebarta.

Govind, a construction supervisor with a private firm and lived in the village, was relieving himself when a wild tusker, which had strayed into the village Friday night, appeared before him, caught hold of him with the trunk and threw him a distance.

Some locals rescued the badly injured victim and got him admitted to district headquarters hospital. He succumbed to injuries during treatment.

The incident has sent a shock wave in the village, as man-elephant face-off has reportedly taken four lives in past five days under Dhenkanal sadar forest range.

Villagers said that most cases took place when the victims were on their way to relieve themselves.

Elephant destroys camera-trap pole put up by forest department

MYSURU: A camera trap put up by the forest department to track the movement of wild animals has captured a wild elephant destroying a camera-trap pole in the forest area under the Nagarahole national park area. In the visuals, a wild tusker is found hitting the camera-trap pole, which has gone viral among foresters. Wildlife experts have pointed out that these pictures are the clear proof for extent wild animals dislike human intervention in their natural habitats.

According to the sources in the forest department, these visuals emerged at the time of a recent inspections inside the Nagarahole National Park area. “These pictures were captured in the camera traps put up inside the deep forest. Many times, wild animals attack the camera trap poles in the forest as they dislike them. It is not an issue. These visuals reflect that generally wild animals don’t like the machine installation in their natural habitats which disturbs them. But camera traps are not dangerous and helps the department in numerous ways,” said an officer who wished to be unnamed.

Wildlife activists also echo similar opinion. According to K Bhagyalaskhmi, an activist, these kind of incidents happening inside the Nagarahole forest zone since 1990’s when camera traps first deployed in the forests. “Pachyderms are very intelligent creatures. We can’t estimate that what is the actual reason for destroying the camera traps. But this wild tusker don’t want this unknown object in his natural habitat. Hence he was kicking by his forelegs once and next pushing and kicking by his hind legs,” she said.
