Foresters open fire to scare jumbo herd, nine suffer pellet injuries

MYSURU: Nine people suffered pellet injuries when forest personnel
opened fire to scare a herd of elephants closing in on a villager in
Chamarajanagar district’s Madhvanahalli in Kollegal taluk on Wednesday.

Of the nine injured, two were discharged after first aid at a Kollegal
hospital. The other seven injured were shifted to Mysuru’s KR Hospital for
a procedure to remove pellets from their body. They are out of danger, a
hospital source said.

Deputy conservator of forests (MM Hills Range) V Yedukondalu told TOI that 60 forest personnel headed out to Madhuvanahallli around 9am following a complaint about a herd of elephants menacingly moving around. “We wanted to send them towards BR Hills forests, but the majestic animals strayed towards a sugarcane field. At that time, a villager walked into the field with a pet dog. Elephants, then, started running towards the villager, forcing us to resort to firing in the air,” he added.

The cane grass was nearly 15ft high, with near-zero visibility. “When our staff fired in the air, pellets hit nine teenagers watching the operation from top of trees and rocks,” he said. Later, the forest department successfully sent the herd back to the forest.

Villagers said the elephants entered the village on Tuesday evening. Shailendra, a farmer, said attacks by wild animals have become common in the recent past and sought compensation for the affected families from the forest department.

Elephants Enter Odisha Villages

There was panic in three Odisha districts when herds of elephants entered the villages damaging houses and crops on Sunday.

An elephant herd, believed to be comprising over 20 jumbos, wreaked havoc in Manijipur village under Kanas block of Puri district. They damaged crops stacked in the backyards. Puri hardly reports elephant depredation.

Police and forest department personnel are keeping a close watch on the movement of elephants as there is every chance of the animals straying into more thickly populated area.

Similarly, the residents of Baratuma, Rangamatia and Baradiha villages in Jaleswar area of Balasore district moved to safer places when a herd having more than 60 elephants entered their villages. As many as 12 houses were destroyed and a few acres of ready-to-harvest paddy was damaged.

Similar incidents were reported from Ghusura Gadhiali village of Sundargarh district. A woman was reportedly trampled to death in Keonjhar district.

Meanwhile, the carcass of an elephant was discovered at Nimakhandi village in Ganjam district on Sunday. Locals alleged that the elephant had marks of gunshots.

More than 100 elephants destroy crops & houses after entering villages in Mayurbhanj

Mayurbhanj (Odisha), Nov 12 (ANI): More than 100 elephants entered Phulajhari and Brahmani villages in Rasagobindpur forest range in Mayurbhanj & destroyed many acres of standing crops and houses in the area. The elephants came from West Bengal and Jharkhand. Reportedly, an elderly man was seriously injured and another one dead after being attacked by an elephant. Such incidences have caused inconvenience to residents who fear destruction of their houses and crops.

Bengaluru, Apr 26 A 47-year-old forest guard was today trampled"to death by a herd of wild elephants in Cauvery Wildlife"Sanctuary in Mandya district, forest officials said.

Mahadevu along with some other foresters had gone to Solaba village in that district to drive away a herd of elephants, which had entered the village and wrecked havoc.

As the elephants were being driven away, some of the jumbos turned violent and ran amok towards the foresters.

While three others made good their escape, the tuskers caught Mahadevu and trampled him to death, the officials said.

Jumbo herd leave behind dehydrated calf in Sullia

Mangaluru: A herd of wild elephants from a nearby reserve forest have sneaked into villages of Sullia taluk, triggering panic among locals in the area.A herd of eight elephants have made their way to the bank of the Payaswini river near Basmadaka in Sullia taluk, about 90 kilometres from here.

According to locals, the elephants have appeared after a gap of two years.

They say the elephants may have come from the Medinadka reserve forest.Meanwhile, forest officials are making desperate attempts to chase the elephants back into the jungle.

Officials say that elephants entered human habitat three days ago.

The herd consist of five calves.

Wild tuskers sent back to reserve forest

A herd of eight wild elephants was sent back to Kadagandi reserve forest area with the help of trained elephants which were brought from Chittoor forest area. Wild elephants entered into plain areas in Amudalavalasa four days ago.

After visiting the spot, chief conservator of forests, Rahul Pandey, discussed the issue with principal chief conservator of forests and brought two trained elephants, Ganesh and Jayanth, from Chittoor district. On Friday evening, ‘Operation Gaja’ started with the help of trained elephants. The herd of wild elephants followed the trained elephants and entered into reserve forest area by Friday night.





“Actually, we requested seven days to send wild elephants into reserve forest area,” district forest officer (territorial) and wild life in-charge, Chalumuri Shanthi Swaroop told The Hans India.

Six year-old elephant rescued by Forest staff

Hassan, Mar 12 (UNI) A six year-old elephant, which was caught in sluggish mud, was rescued by the forest officials at Magge forest of Alur taluk in this district on Monday.

According to Forest officials, a heard of about six elephants entered Magge Forest range last night in search of water. However, one of the elephant which entered the pond was struck in sluggish mud and was unable to come out. This morning the villagers noticed and informed the forest officials.
The forest officials struggled for four hours to lift the elephant with the help of JCB and succeeded.
The elephant, which struggled through out the night in the mud, after being rescued attacked the JCB and others. Thereafter, with people cheers and sound, the elephant returned to the forest.
