Elephant Stuck in Mud Saved by Indian Villagers

An elephant that was stuck in the mud got help from villagers in India.

Locals near Kochi saved the pachyderm after it became trapped in a swamp. It was being transported to a parade when it got stuck.

Heavy equipment couldn’t reach the area, prompting locals to jump in and free the beast.

They filled the swamp with bags of sand until they could extricate the elephant.

According to a video from Vocativ, more than 200 locals got involved and helped.

Overall, it took about 17 hours to finally free the animal.

The clip was shot last year.

Six year-old elephant rescued by Forest staff

Hassan, Mar 12 (UNI) A six year-old elephant, which was caught in sluggish mud, was rescued by the forest officials at Magge forest of Alur taluk in this district on Monday.

According to Forest officials, a heard of about six elephants entered Magge Forest range last night in search of water. However, one of the elephant which entered the pond was struck in sluggish mud and was unable to come out. This morning the villagers noticed and informed the forest officials.
The forest officials struggled for four hours to lift the elephant with the help of JCB and succeeded.
The elephant, which struggled through out the night in the mud, after being rescued attacked the JCB and others. Thereafter, with people cheers and sound, the elephant returned to the forest.

Elephant, stuck in pit, dies

An elephant, believed to be less than eight-years-old, died after getting stuck in a sewage pit inside a private resort built along the notified elephant corridor in Bokkapuram on Thursday. Forest officials said that the elephant got stuck in the sewage pit at the 'Wild Inn Resort' in Bokkapuram, in the Singara Forest Range in the Nilgiris North Forest Division on late Wednesday night. Local residents said that they could hear the piercing screams of the young elephant more than 1 km away.

But the resort management failed to inform the forest department of the incident till Thursday morning, by which time the animal died. S.

Kanthan, Singara Forest Range Officer, said that the elephant got stuck into the sewage pit after a cement block used to cover it caved in when the animal stood over it. It managed to climb out but one of its hind legs got stuck inside. The incident has brought to focus the problems created by ‘illegal’ resorts on wildlife in the area. S.

Jayachandran, joint secretary of the Tamil Nadu Green Movement, said that only two resorts in the area had license to operate, and that the others, including the resort where the elephant died, was functioning without permission. “We expect strong action, including the arrest of the resort owners for their negligence in causing the death of the elephant,” he added. S.

Kalanidhi, District Forest Officer, Nilgiris North Division, said that a case has been registered. “We will act against the concerned persons once we have fixed culpability, and after the completion of a post-mortem examination of the elephant,” he said. Forest department staff spent an entire day trying to figure out how to extricate the carcass of the elephant from the sewage pit, and decided to use an earth mover to pull the carcass out..

Elephant rescued from Chila reservoir

In a major rescue operation, Uttarakhand forest authorities rescued an elephant, who got stuck in the barrage in Chila area of Rajaji Tiger Reserve. The forest authorities received an information in the wee hours today that an elephant had got stuck in the Chila barrage waters and was unable to come out. The elephant had got washed away upstream and ultimately got stuck into Chila barrage waters. Forest officials at the nearby Gohri range were first to reach and begin rescue operations. The Uttarakhand hydro power authorities were contacted and gate number one of the barrage was immediately opened. This helped elephant come into the main river from the barrage waters following which the gate one was closed again so that volume of water downstream was reduced. Subsequently, the decrease in water volume helped elephant come out of the river into the forest area. The elephant, who was forty year old, later left for Chaurasi Kutiya area of the reserve.

Elephant dies due to starvation after being stuck in pond

Kodagu (Karnataka), Mar 18 (ANI): An elephant in Karnataka?s Kodagu died due to starvation after it got stuck in the pond for more than 12 hours. The forest officials had arrived to rescue the tusker, however, due to starvation; the creature couldn't survive for long.

Baby elephants mum stuck watering hole

Three baby elephants and their mother who jumped into a watering hole for a drink had to be rescued after they got stuck in the muddy bath in northern India.

Nearby villagers woke to the sound of 'trumpeting' and rushed to the pond to find the four trapped elephants in Dhelsara village, Chhattisgarh state yesterday.

Locals threw branches and tree trunks into the mud to keep the panting, exhausted elephants afloat while they helped the mother escape.

Meanwhile, diggers created a slope to allow her three babies to follow her out.

One onlooker said: 'As the villagers waited for the rescue team to arrive, they helped them keep afloat by hurling dry branches of trees and also offered them food.

'The rescue team, armed with cranes and excavators arrived at the scene in an hour and started the operation.

'They broadened the mouth of the water tank and made a slope for the elephants to climb out of the slushy tank.

'The idea worked, the elephants managed to come out of the tank on their own and ran towards the jungle.'
