Man dead as herd of wild elephants runs amok in C'garh village



Korba, May 8 A 45-year-old man was today trampled to death by wild elephants in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district, officials said.

The incident occurred in the small hours in Mohanpur village under Surajpur Forest Division, when the victim, identified asJeetan Singh, was visiting his relative's place, a forest official said.

As per preliminary information, a herd of elephants stormed into the village, located around 450 kms away from here, late last night prompting villagers to flee for safety, he said.

Singh, who was also trying to flee, got trapped and was trampled to death by pachyderms, he said.

Forest and police personnel rushed to the spot and sent Singh's body for postmortem this morning, the official said.

The kin of the deceased, who hailed from Jharkhand, will be given compensation as per the rules, the official added.

The thickly forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Surajpur and Balrampur districts, is notorious for the incidents of conflicts between humans and elephants.

In recent years, the region has witnessed frequent killings of tribals and widespread damage to houses and crops by rogueelephants.

Elephant kills cyclist in Dooars of Bengal, Leopard evacuated safely



In a fresh man-animal conflict a tusker today trampled to death a man while he was cycling on the highway to hisworking place in the Dooars of West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, forestranger Dulal Ghosh said.

The killing of man by the adult elephant happened in broad day light around Targhera jungle checkpost.

Eyewitnesses said the pachyderm came out of the forest on the state highway and picked up the panicked cyclist, who stopped paddling before the jumbo, from its trunk and hurled on metal road and stumped on the body. The deceased, identified as Priyanath Biswas (40), a carpenter by profession.

The body was sent for postmortem. The ranger said the bereaved family would be compensated accordingly. Elsewhere, a live leopard was today got into a trap inside the Simulbari tea estate. The leopard was also evacuated safely into a jungle.

Man trampled to death by wild elephant



Dhenkanal (Odisha), Apr 17 (PTI) An elderly man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at a village in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district today, a forest officer said.

It is the fifth time since March that people have been killed in jumbo attack in the area, the official said.

An alert was sounded by forest officials soon after the incident asking people of the area to be vigilant and remain indoors in the evening hours, he said.

The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Brajabandhu Sahu who was working in his farmland at Bangrusingh village, under the jurisdiction of Sadar forest range, when the pachyderm attacked him, the Forest Ranger of Sadar range Darsania Bhoi said.

Expressing their anger over the incident, local residents staged a blockade on the Cuttack-Angul road demanding adequate compensation for the kin of the deceased.

They also demanded effective measures to tackle the elephant menace in the area.

Bhoi said necessary steps were being taken for providing assistance to the family of the deceased as per rules and guidelines.

The incident comes close on the heels of a jumbo attack on April 14 when a labourer was killed by a wild elephant near Goudakateni canal, he said.

Two persons were killed in separate incidents of jumbo attack on April 12.

One person had been killed by an elephant in Kamakhyanagar area on March 4, Bhoi said.

Wild elephant kills a man to death



An elderly man was trampled to death by a wild elephant here on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Baraju Sahu of Bangurasingh village under Odapada block in Dhenkanal.

According to reports, Sahu was busy in plucking vegetables from the garden and at the same time it seems that the elephant was in search of food.

Later, the jumbo trampled him on the spot. The presence of the wild animal creates panic among the villagers.

Man trampled to death by elephant in Odisha



Dhenkanal(Odisha), Apr 14 (PTI) A man was trampled to death by an elephant in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district today, police said.

The incident happened in the Sadar forest range area when the man was on his way to a canal, the police.

The deceased was a resident of Goudakateni village under the jurisdiction of Motanga police station, the Forest Ranger of Sadar range, Darsania Bhoi, said.

This was the third death due to elephant attack within a span of two days, he said.

A compensation of Rs 40,000 was paid to the family members of the deceased, Bhoi added.

Marauding wild elephants kill two



Coimbatore/Udhagamandalam: Two persons, who were out in the open to attend nature’s call, were killed in as many wild elephant attacks reported on the outskirts of the city and in the Nilgiris district, respectively, on Saturday early morning.
While an 85-year-old man was reportedly gored to death by a wild tusker on the Noyyal river bed near Karunya Nagar on the outskirts of the city, another 45-year-old man was trampled to death by a rogue elephant at Bennai village in the Nilgiris.

According to police, C Ramasamy, of Marakkadu Thottam near Karunya Nagar, used to go to the Noyyal river bed area around 5am to attend nature’s call and return home around 6am daily.

On Saturday early morning, Ramasamy as usual left for the river bed area. As he didn’t return home even after 6am, his son Yuvaraj, 48, went in search of him and found his father battling for life with a deep injury on his abdomen. Ramasamy told his son that he was attacked by a wild elephant. Immediately, Ramasamy was taken to a private hospital at Karunya Nagar, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Boluvampatti forest ranger officer (incahrge) C Palaniraja and team visited the spot and handed over Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family members as an initial compensation.
