2 elephants found dead on same day

Coimbatore: Hours after forest department officials recovered the carcass of a seven-year-old male elephant from a contour canal in Udumalpet forest range on Friday, an eight year old male elephant was found dead in the canal a short distance away.

Farmers, who noticed the carcass of the elephant in the canal at Vallakondapuram in the Udumalpet range had informed the officials around 6.30am. A team led by forest ranger Dhanabalan rushed to the spot and retrieved it. “With the help of a veterinarian, postmortem was conducted near the canal and the carcass was buried in a nearby area. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained. We believe it died at some other place,” Dhanabalan said.

The official received another phone call around 4pm about the carcass of another male elephant in the canal. A team of officials reached the spot and conducted postmortem. The carcass was later buried inside the forest. tnn

Male elephant found dead in Thirumoorthy reservoir

Tirupur: The carcass of a seven-year-old male elephant was found near Thirumoorthy reservoir in Tirupur district on Friday. It was found floating in the contour canal, which drains into the reservoir.

Forest department officials fished out the carcass from the canal. “We believe the elephant could have slipped into the canal while drinking water and sustained injuries on its head. The real cause of death could be ascertained only after investigation,” said a senior forest official.

A medical team conducted postmortem. The officials were taking steps to bury the carcass at the spot.

The discovery of the carcass has diverted the attention of the Udumalpet range forest personnel, who had been busy in the past few days monitoring crop-raiding elephant Chinna Thambi, which was roaming in Madathukulam area near Udumalpet

Jumbo that strayed killed by train in Jorhat

A seven-year-old male elephant was mowed down by a passenger train in Titabar in Jorhat district on Wednesday.

The incident took place soon after the animal got separated from its herd and came towards railway track without the knowledge of the field staff, who were busy controlling another larger herd.

The front luggage-cum-parcel van of the Guwahati–Ledo Intercity Express derailed after hitting the animal at a spot between Titabar and Mariani stations under Tinsukia division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The train was running at 60km per hour when the incident took place.

“The herd, from which the elephant got separated, was taking shelter in Bokaholla tea estate. The herd then split into smaller groups. Our team

was trying to control another herd when the incident took place,” divisional forest officer of Jorhat Davinder Suman said.

“Officials of the NFR and the forest department communicate regularly through a WhatsApp group. But the field staff didn’t realise when this lone elephant got separated from its herd and climbed onto the track,” she added.

This is the second incident of an elephant being killed by a train in this area this year. The first incident took place in February.

The NFR authorities said all passengers got off the train soon after the incident. Senior officials of the Tinsukia division reached the site immediately with a relief train. The stretch was restored at 7.45am. The stranded train left the site around 8.06am.

“While prima facie investigation suggests that the train was within its stipulated speed, a departmental inquiry has been ordered,” an NFR statement said.

Movement of elephants has increased manifold in the area in the recent past. Trains are constantly asked to slow down whenever any information of herd movement is shared with the railway by the forest department. This is a notified elephant corridor for the forest department but not for the railways.

“As many as 200 such incidents have been prevented this year alone owing to a close coordination between the field staff of both the forest department and the NFR,” the statement added.

Tuskers’ fight cause of elephant death, hunt on for ‘killer’

BIJNOR: A day after a decomposed carcass of an seven-year-old male elephant was discovered from Rajgarh elephant reserve in Bijnor's Najibabad forest division, its post-mortem conducted by experts from Wildlife Institute of India, Lucknow and Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly revealed that it sustained wounds in a fight with another tusker and bled profusely.

A hunt is now on to find the other tusker to prevent similar incidents. Rajgarh is connected with both Rajaji and Corbett National Parks in neighbouring Uttarakhand.

Najibabad’s divisional forest officer Udayveer Singh said, “The young elephant was attacked by a mature elephant having sharp tusks while the dead elephant’s tusks were small and blunt.”

According to official sources, post-mortem report said the dead elephant’s bone above its tail was found fractured and there were injury marks caused by another elephant’s tusks on its body.
