Jumbo kills man, injures another
Dibrugarh: A man was trampled to death by wild jumbos and another was seriously injured on Friday night at the Brahmajan area of Khatangpani forest range under Doomdooma forest division in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district.
The deceased has been identified as Debcharan Karmakar, 45, of Brahmajan. Bipin Karmakar, who was injured, is undergoing treatment at Digboi civil hospital.
Sources said Debcharan and Bipin, on coming to know about elephant depredation near their house, tried to chase the herd away. One elephant from the herd attacked them and killed Debcharan.
Doomdooma forest officer K.Z. Zinnah said a team of forest officials rushed to the place on coming to know about the incident.
Debcharan and Bipin were taken to the hospital where Debcharan was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
"Man-elephant conflict is a major problem at present. Elephants come out of forest in search of food and, as a result, a conflict arises. Forest cover has been shrinking tremendously," Zinnah said.
Last month, two women were trampled to death by elephants in Tinsukia.
