TWO TRAMPLED TO DEATH BY ELEPHANTS IN ODISHA

86 persons were killed in 2018-19, toll likely to go up

Three persons, including a child, were killed since Friday when elephants strayed into human habitation in different districts of Odisha. The three deaths took the human death toll in man-elephant conflict in the State to 86 in 2018-19 — the highest in a year.

Dayanidhi Sahu, 65, on his way to the village pond, was trampled to death on Saturday. Kedar Nath Prasad, an octogenarian, was attacked by a wild elephant wandering since February 28 in the Deulabeda area of Angul district. A seven-year-old boy died when a wall knocked by an elephant collapsed in the Baraghat village in Sundargarh district on Friday night.

Rising encounters

“In 2017-18, 84 persons died in encounters with elephants. This year, 86 deaths have already taken place. The toll is likely to go up with another month’s time left to complete the estimation,” said Ranjit Patnaik, campaigner with the Wildlife Society of Odisha (WSO), an NGO.

“This year, man-elephant encounters shot up to 159 against 120 last year. As many as 101 persons escaped with critical injuries after being chased by wild elephants,” said Mr. Patnaik.

Dhenkanal remains one of the most affected districts. “Of the 159 encounters, Dhenkanal accounts for 50. Twenty-one persons died and 38 were injured in the attacks,” he said.

According to government records, 680 people lost their lives in attacks by wild animals between 2011-12 and 2018-19. Of the 680 deaths, 535 human deaths were caused by elephant attacks.

Indian Villagers Hurl Firebombs at Elephant and Her Calf for 'Damaging Crops’

For centuries, the Asian elephant was regarded as a cultural icon of India. But now, a large number of farmers and civilians view the giant land mammal to be a pest. This was again made evident when a mob of people in an Indian village brutally attacked an elephant and her calf with firebombs.

Two photographs recently surfaced showing elephants crossing a road. Behind them, an angry mob of men can be seen launching flaming missiles at the fleeing pachyderms. As reported by The Independent, the incident occurred in the village of Bishnupur, a remote settlement in West Bengal.

The compelling photographs were captured by Biplab Hazra. His goal being to showcase violence against the endangered species as it attempts to survive in smaller and more fragmented habitats.

Sadly, encounters of the sort captured in Hazra’s photographs are becoming increasingly common. The primary cause of conflict? Deforestation. As land is clear-cut, wild animals are left with less and less space to live. This is causing them to venture into territories occupied by humans.

As the images reveal, villagers are going to extreme lengths to drive elephants from their fields. The land is their livelihood, so one can understand the desperate attempts to scare away the elephants. However, to the observer, it is clear they, too, are simply victims of urban expansion.

Regarding the use of fire, Hazra told Caters News Agency:
“This happens because the villagers have to save their crops. There are many elephant corridors in human habitations. I’m trying to show this and spread my photos to increase public awareness on the matter.”
Each day, elephants spend up to 19 hours foraging for food. During this time, they also produce 220 pounds of feces. The elephant is a gargantuan land mammal that requires ample space to roam freely. If this need isn’t met, the elephants will continue to search for food elsewhere.

This reality needs to be realized by all, not only the Indian villagers who rely on the elephant’s dung to germinate their crops. To survive into the 22nd century, mammals will need the help of humankind. Discovering a tactic to resolve these conflicts is of the utmost importance. Otherwise, elephants — both African and Asian — may one day only exist in history books.

Elephant Went On Rampage Through The Village in India (Photos)

A young elephant went on a rampage through the village of Khordha in India, where no fewer than three people were injured as they tried to get out of its way. The animal sparked panic as terrified villagers were forced to climb onto the roofs of their homes to find a place of safety.

The elephant ran around wildly and caused havoc as it attacked people and homes, damaged property and trampled bicycles and scooters, according to local media. Footage captured by one of the villagers, who was hiding in a doorway, shows the elephant ploughing into a cluster of bicycles – sending some of them flying – as it runs around.

Later, villagers who sought refuge on a roof look on as the animal storms around during Saturday’s rampage. The elephant then stood on railway tracks for some time, causing delays for a few trains, as it dug its foot into the rocks like a bull does before charging.

It later disappeared into the forest on its own. Local officials said three people suffered minor injuries as they tried to escape the elephant.
