Elephant kills morning walker

A man who was out on a morning walk was killed by an elephant here on Wednesday, the police said.

Eyewitness said an elephant chased the 54-year-old man, identified as Virendra Singh. Though he tried to flee, he failed and was attacked by the pachyderm.

The body was discovered by others who were also on a morning walk. The victim was employed with BHEL.

The BHEL colony had off and on suffered attacks by elephants and last year two persons were killed, the police said. The police said forest department officials had been asked to hunt the elephant and take it to the forest from where it had strayed into the colony. IANS

Elderly woman killed by wild elephant in C'garh

A septuagenarian woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Korba district of Chhattisgarh this morning, police said.

The victim, identified as Nevarthin Bai (78), was attacked by the pachyderm when she had gone to collect forest produce from the forest adjacent to her village Sakdukala in Kartala forest range, a forest official said.


"She spotted the pachyderm in the forest, after which she tried to escape. However, the elephant chased and attacked her, in which she died on the spot," he said.

The local villagers spotted her body and informed the police and forest officials, following which they rushed to the spot, he said.

The woman's body has been sent for the post-mortem, he said adding that a case has been registered in this connection.

"The kin of the deceased were given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 by the forest department, while the remaining compensation amount of Rs 3.75 lakh will be disbursed after completing all the formalities in this connection," the official said.

With this incident, so far three people, including two women, have been killed in elephant attacks at separate places in the district, the official said.

Forest personnel have been directed to keep an eye on the movement of elephants in the area to avoid human-jumbo conflicts and drive them away from the human habitations, he added.

The thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Korea districts, are notorious for human-elephant conflict.

The region has witnessed killings of several tribals and widespread damages to houses and crops by rogue elephants in the past few years.

Man killed by elephant in Odisha, India

In another incident of man-animal conflict in Odisha, a daily wage laborer was killed in elephant attack at Gengutia under Sadar police limits in Dhenkanal district on Saturday.

The deceased identified as Sushant Behera of Gengutia village was on his way to Dhenkanal town along with two other co-workers, when a pachyderm attacked the trio near the level crossing.

While the two labourers managed to escape from the spot, Sushant was trampled to death by the wild elephant, sources said.

"Since last five years, the land here is not being used for agricultural purpose as elephants are destroying standing crops. We had earlier requested the forest department to at least alarm us when elephants are straying near the human settlements. But they do not even bother if we inform them about the movement of jumbos in the area," alleged Ranjan Mallick, a local resident.

Sources said a herd of elephants was spotted near the area earlier this week.

"I had no information about the movement of elephant herd in the area. But as the locals are alleging about the presence of the elephants, so squads will deployed here soon," said Dhenkanal Range officer, Darshan Bhoi refuting the allegations of dereliction of duties by forest officials.

A sum of Rs 40,000 will be given to the family of the deceased now and the remaining assistance of Rs 3,60,000 will be provided after the victim's family submits necessary documents, he added.

Jumbo tramples woman, daughter to death

Diphu (Assam), May 19 (PTI) A woman and her daughter were killed when a wild elephant trampled them in Karbi Anglong district of Assam today, police sources said.

The pachyderm attacked the two when they were asleep in their thatched house in the village under Khatkhati police station, the sources said.

The deceased have been identified as Muni Devi (35) and Puja Kumari (3), they added.

Man trampled to death by wild elephant

Dhenkanal (Odisha), Apr 17 (PTI) An elderly man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at a village in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district today, a forest officer said.

It is the fifth time since March that people have been killed in jumbo attack in the area, the official said.

An alert was sounded by forest officials soon after the incident asking people of the area to be vigilant and remain indoors in the evening hours, he said.

The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Brajabandhu Sahu who was working in his farmland at Bangrusingh village, under the jurisdiction of Sadar forest range, when the pachyderm attacked him, the Forest Ranger of Sadar range Darsania Bhoi said.

Expressing their anger over the incident, local residents staged a blockade on the Cuttack-Angul road demanding adequate compensation for the kin of the deceased.

They also demanded effective measures to tackle the elephant menace in the area.

Bhoi said necessary steps were being taken for providing assistance to the family of the deceased as per rules and guidelines.

The incident comes close on the heels of a jumbo attack on April 14 when a labourer was killed by a wild elephant near Goudakateni canal, he said.

Two persons were killed in separate incidents of jumbo attack on April 12.

One person had been killed by an elephant in Kamakhyanagar area on March 4, Bhoi said.
