Supaul, Mar 06 (UNI) Three people were trampled to death by rogue elephants under Raghopur
police station area in the district today.

Police said here that herd of rogue elephants entered in Raghopur police station area from Nepal
and trampled to death three locals.Those killed were identified as Yogeshwar Yadav, Ranjit Sah
and Jatiya Devi, police added.

"A team of forest department was called by local police station who chased away rogue elephants
to Nepal", police said, adding that the bodies had been sent for postmortem.

Elderly woman killed by wild elephant in C'garh

A septuagenarian woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Korba district of Chhattisgarh this morning, police said.

The victim, identified as Nevarthin Bai (78), was attacked by the pachyderm when she had gone to collect forest produce from the forest adjacent to her village Sakdukala in Kartala forest range, a forest official said.


"She spotted the pachyderm in the forest, after which she tried to escape. However, the elephant chased and attacked her, in which she died on the spot," he said.

The local villagers spotted her body and informed the police and forest officials, following which they rushed to the spot, he said.

The woman's body has been sent for the post-mortem, he said adding that a case has been registered in this connection.

"The kin of the deceased were given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 by the forest department, while the remaining compensation amount of Rs 3.75 lakh will be disbursed after completing all the formalities in this connection," the official said.

With this incident, so far three people, including two women, have been killed in elephant attacks at separate places in the district, the official said.

Forest personnel have been directed to keep an eye on the movement of elephants in the area to avoid human-jumbo conflicts and drive them away from the human habitations, he added.

The thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Korea districts, are notorious for human-elephant conflict.

The region has witnessed killings of several tribals and widespread damages to houses and crops by rogue elephants in the past few years.

Elderly man killed by elephant in Chhattisgarh

The victim, Ghusiram Rathiya, was attacked by the elephant when he had gone to collect mangoes in the forest adjacent to his village Champa this morning,he said.

While collecting mangoes, he spotted two pachyderms following which he tried to escape from there. However, one of the elephants chased the elderly man and crushed him to death, he said.

Some local villagers spotted his body and informed police and forest officials, who rushed to the spot, he said.

The kin of the deceased were given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 by the forest department, while the remaining compensation of Rs 4.75 lakh will be disbursed after completing all formalities, the officail said.

Villagers have been advised not to venture inside the forest in view of reports that a group of at least 35 jumbos is roaming in the area for the last few days, he said.

Notably, the thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Korea districts, is known for incidents of human-elephant conflict.

The region has witnessed several killings of tribals and widespread damage to houses and crops by rogue elephants in the past years.

Man dead as herd of wild elephants runs amok in C'garh village

Korba, May 8 A 45-year-old man was today trampled to death by wild elephants in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district, officials said.

The incident occurred in the small hours in Mohanpur village under Surajpur Forest Division, when the victim, identified asJeetan Singh, was visiting his relative's place, a forest official said.

As per preliminary information, a herd of elephants stormed into the village, located around 450 kms away from here, late last night prompting villagers to flee for safety, he said.

Singh, who was also trying to flee, got trapped and was trampled to death by pachyderms, he said.

Forest and police personnel rushed to the spot and sent Singh's body for postmortem this morning, the official said.

The kin of the deceased, who hailed from Jharkhand, will be given compensation as per the rules, the official added.

The thickly forested northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Surajpur and Balrampur districts, is notorious for the incidents of conflicts between humans and elephants.

In recent years, the region has witnessed frequent killings of tribals and widespread damage to houses and crops by rogueelephants.

Elderly man killed by wild elephants in C'garh

An elderly man lost his life after he was attacked by a herd of wild elephants in a village in Surjapur district in northern Chhattisgarh, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday.


This is the third incident in the last four days in the northern region of the state, in which an elephant or a group of them killed a human being.

"The incident took place yesterday when the victim identified as Mansai (65) had gone to pick mahua fruits in Sakalpur village forest under Pratappur forest range," Sub Divisional Officer (Pratappur forest range) Prabhakar Khalko said.

There, he was attacked by a herd of wild elephants. When some villagers working in the fields adjacent to the site informed the forest and police officials about the incident, they rushed to the spot, she said.

The wife of the deceased was given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 by the forest department, while the remaining compensation of Rs 3.75 lakh will be released after completing the necessary formalities, Khalko added.

The movement of a group of 60 jumbos is being reported in the area from the last few days. The chances of human-animal conflict increase during this season as villagers go in the forest areas to pluck tendu leaves as well as mahua fruits.

On April 9, a 50-year-old man was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in Pratappur forest range.

Similarly, on Sunday (April 8), a 62-year-old farmer was killed in an elephant attack in Dharamjaigarh forest division of the region's Raigarh district.

"After the recent incidents, the villagers have been advised to take precautions and stay alert," she said.

Wild elephant kills farmer in Cgarh

Raigarh, Apr 9 (PTI)�A wild elephant killed an elderly farmer in Chhattisagrhs Raigarh district, Forest officials said today.

The incident occurred last evening in Purunga village forest under Chhal forest range when Roopsai Agariya was headed towards his paddy field, said Dharamjaigarh Division Forest Officer (DFO) Paranay�Mishra.

Agariya came face-to-face with the pachyderm who chased and attacked him with its trunk, killing him on the spot, he said.

On receiving information, forest and police personnel rushed to the spot and sent Agariyas body for postmortem.

The kin of the deceased have been given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 by the Forest department, the DFO said.

"The movement of a group of 14 jumbos has been reported in the area for the last few days. Therefore, the villagers have been advised to take precautions and stay alert while passing through jungles," he said.

Karnataka forest official killed by elephant while inspecting forest fire

The Karnataka forest department has instructed its staff to exercise utmost caution while tackling forest fire after an elephant killed an officer in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, on Saturday.

The officer, S Manikandan, 45, director of the reserve, was killed in the DB Kuppe forest range when he was inspecting damage caused by a forest fire. He was cremated with full state honours in his home town Cumbum in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

There were reports that the team had ignored precautionary measures while venturing into the fire-hit part of the forest.

Apparently, they were not carrying any firearm when the incident took place. The elephants presence could not be detected because of thick smoke, which had enveloped the forest.

Rogue elephants are extremely hostile. Moreover, a wild animal becomes agitated when it gets stuck in a forest fire. One must be extremely careful while visiting fire-hit forests because animals can turn up from any direction to escape the fire. This was a highly unfortunate incident, a first-time in recent years that an IFS officer was killed such a way, remarked wildlife activist B Manjunath.

An official, close to minister for forests, environment and ecology B Ramanath Rai, said the government reviewed the situation in the wake of Saturdays incident.

All officers and staffers have been strictly asked to carry firearms when venturing into the forests. With the summer already setting in, incidents of forest fires will rise. Our staffers have to be on guard.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident lasted for a few seconds resulting in the tragedy. The forest officials, along with Manikandan, and a local RFO, were assessing the damage caused when the elephant attacked from behind. While the RFO managed to escape, Manikandan slipped and fell to the ground and the elephant killed him.

Though his staff rushed him to HD Kote Hospital, he could not make it.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Manikandan in their tweets, praising him for his work.

Manikandan is credited with working tirelessly to end the rising incidents of human-animal conflicts in many parts of Karnataka. A 2001 batch officer, he had worked in Bidar, Raichur, Ballari and Bengaluru. He had spent considerable time in Karnataka pursuing his academics.

Rogue elephant released into the wild, alert on

Coimbatore: The 18-year-old rogue elephants that rampaged through the outskirts of the city early on Friday killing four people, injuring an equal number and spreading terror was released into the reserve forest at Anaikundhi near Varagaliyar elephant camp the same night. It had been captured by the forest department in a nine-hour operation. The forest department has deployed more than 20 anti-poaching watchers (APWs) led by a forest ranger at the Anaikundhi area to monitor the tusker.

Initially the department planned to keep the animal in a krawl (a wooden enclosure where captured wild elephants are confined for training) in the Varagaliyar elephant camp. However, after forest department officials discussed the matter with forest department minister Dindigul C Srinivasan, it was decided to release the animal into the reserve forest.

The captured male elephant was transported to the Varagaliyar elephant camp from Vellalapalayam near Vellalore in Coimbatore and later taken 5 km away in a truck and released around 11.30 pm on Friday.
