Elephant calf found dead on Bhavani river bed

ERODE: A one-and-half-year-old female elephant calf was found dead on the Bhavani river bed here on Friday.

The incident came to light on the early hours of the day after Public Works Department (PWD) officials spotted an elephant herd roaming in the Bhavanisagar dam area and alerted forest officials.

“When we reached the spot, we found an elephant calf lying on the river bed with the elephant held standing close to it,” a forest official said.

After chasing the elephant herd away, veterinary doctors checked the calf and found it had died. During postmortem, they found the calf had sustained severe head injuries.

“The calf might have fallen off the dam sidewall while attempting to cross from one side to the other after drinking water from the river,” the official said.

After the autopsy, the carcass was buried in the dam area.
