HC seeks report on health condition of elephant

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday, hearing a plea seeking treatment of a sick elephant and against its transfer to Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (Bengaluru) given its health condition, has sought an additional status report. A division bench of Justices M.Sathyanarayanan and R.Hemalatha directed the Wildlife Warden, Virudhunagar, and the District-level Captive Elephants Welfare Committee, Virudhunagar, to inspect the elephant undergoing treatment at the Animal Care Trust, Virudhunagar, and file a report by March 21. The court directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden to report on sites with medical facilities for treating elephants. The petitioner, A.Karthick Selvam of Virudhunagar, had moved the High Court stating that the elephant, Lakshmi, owned by N.

Soundarajan of Palani, was suffering from foot rot infection as it was not nurtured properly.

He claimed that the elephant was used to seek alms from the public. He said that the Conservator of Forests, Dindigul, had rescued the elephant.

Veterinary doctors treated it and they advised treatment at the Animal Care Trust. But the owner wanted to entrust the custody of the elephant to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRCC), Bengaluru, for a year.

During the course of the treatment, it emerged that the elephant is Indira.

Sick elephant dies, calf rescued

According to a source, one Ramu spotted the elephant lying unconscious and its calf roaming around as he was passing by Pappathi Farm in Jarathal around 6am and informed the villagers.

People soon gathered at the spot and alerted the forest department. The villagers made an attempt to feed sugarcane and corn to the animals, but the calf didn't let them approach its mother elephant.

Forest officials, along with veterinary doctor Asokan, reached the spot. This time too, the calf didn't allow the veterinary doctor to approach the adult elephant to offer treatment. Asokan subsequently tranquilised the calf to provide medical help to the adult elephant. But, the elephant died.

The forest officials rescued the calf and took it to Sennampatti forest range. "We are providing treatment to the calf," they said.

Selfie with wild elephant lands man in hospital

BHUBANESWAR: Taking selfie with a wild elephant cost a youth dear. The pachyderm suddenly attacked the man and left him in serious condition. It happened at Masania village under Motanga police limits in Dhenkanal district on Tuesday.

He was identified as Abhisekh Nayak, 20, of Masania. He was excited to see the wild elephants near his village. To make the moment memorable, he tried to take a selfie with the animal, locals said.
The villagers were in a state of fear during last two days as a herd of elephant entered into the area. Nayak had gone with a few locals to the woods to have a glimpse of the wild elephants. Without realising the risk involved, he went to one of the wild elephants to take a selfie with the pachyderm. The violent animal chased him and attacked him.

Motanga police station inspector-in-charge PK Tripathy said the locals immediately came to Nayak's rescue and admitted him to the district headquarters hospital at Dhenkanal. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, he added.

He is undergoing treatment in AMRI hospital here. "He has received multiple injuries in his body. His abdomen is severely injured. We have operated on his body. He is now in surgical ICU. But his condition is stable," said AMRI Hospital Bhubaneswar vice chairman Salil Mohanty.
