This is the moment a mother elephant frantically tried to pull her baby from a pit after it fell into a swamp in India. The incident happened yesterday when a herd of elephants was passing through the fields

The incident happened yesterday in Golaghat district in Assam, in the north-east of the country, when the herd of around 30 elephants were passing through Numaligarh village.

The elephants had raided the village and adjoining fields at night in search of food. On their way back to the forest, one of the baby elephants fell into the ditch. Initially, the herd members tried to help pull the baby out of the swamp but when they couldn’t, they decided to move on.

These are the amazing scenes as an elephant desperately tried to free its calf from a swam.

The mother pushed the calf free after uprooting a bamboo fence

But the mother of the calf dug in her heels and decided to lift her baby to safety at any cost. She tried different ways to pull her offspring out of the ditch before removing bamboo fences with her trunk and entering the ditch herself.

After several attempts she finally managed to pull the baby out of the ditch with her trunk.

Following the dramatic rescue attempt the elephant and calf returned to the herd.
