Wild Elephant Arrives Uninvited At Bengal Marriage Ceremony! Kills Woman

Siliguri: A wild elephant last night (18 November) forayed into a marriage ceremony in north Bengal and killed a woman, besides injuring three more persons.

The victim has been identified as Meena Oran, who was in her late 30’s. The three injured include her husband Punai Oran, and two other men named Mangru Oran and Dulu Roy all of whom were invitees to the marriage ceremony.

The mishap occurred at Barmadhura under Matelli police station area in Jalpaiguri district around 8 pm last night.

A marriage ceremony was on in a household at Barmadhura who is not far from the Lataguri forest which is home to a wide range of wild animals, including elephants. As the invitees were having dinner, a wild elephant forayed into the house and started trampling whatever came its way.
Seeing the marauding elephant, the invitees and the host family started running helter-skelter. The animal first broke the veranda of a room and then trampled Meena who was trying to hide into the room with her husband and others.
The woman died on the spot. Her husband and two other men were injured. They were rushed to the Mal Super Speciality Hospital and are still admitted there.

After the elephant killed the woman and injured others, people from the surrounding areas started shouting all at once. This made the killer elephant flee to the Lataguri forest.
People of the area have said that every year when the paddy gets ready for harvest, wild elephants foray into the paddy fields and also into the adjacent villages. Despite knowing this, foresters never patrol the areas lying in the vicinity of the forests, they alleged.
Forest officials have said that the deceased and the injured will be given compensation as per the government norms. The state government recently increased the compensation for those killed or injured in wild animal raids.
