Elephants brought from Karnataka to Dudhwa in good health
SHAHJAHANPUR: All the 23 patrol team elephants of Dudhwa Tiger
Reserve, including a six-month-old calf called Durga, were found to be fit
during a three-day health camp held in the reserve. The elephants
underwent a thorough checkup, were vaccinated and treated for minor
ailments at camp by veterinarian Dr KK Sharma and his team.
All the elephants were given anti-rabies vaccines and their de-worming
was also completed. The elephants were also given vitamin supplements
and other necessary medicines.
Sharma specially came for the camp from Assam. This was the second
camp to be organized in Dudhwa.
While examining the herd, the vet and his team found a significant increase in weight of all the 10 elephants which were brought from Karnataka earlier this year. Their condition suggested that the elephants from Karnataka had adapted themselves to the environment in Dudhwa.
All the elephants brought from Karnataka, kept at Bheera camp, were found quite healthy and responsive. The experts found that Karnataka elephants had not only put on weight but were healthier than what their condition was during the previous camp held in July this year. “Despite low temperature in Dudhwa, these elephants have adapted themselves according to the surrounding,” said deputy director, DTR, Mahaveer Kaujalgi.
