Elephants kill one in Pakur


Pakur, Dec 18 (UNI) A 30-year-old man was run over by group of wild elephants at Khaksa
village under Pakuria block of this district.

The deceased has been identified as Julius alias Emanuel Hembrom (30). Yesterday night a
group of elephants had reached in the various villages of Pakurai block and while the people
gathered to chase them away the deceased accidentally fell and was later crushed by the
elephants.

Pakur DC Kuldeep Chowdhary said that a person was killed by a group of elephants in Pakuria
block and to ensure that such incidents do not take place in future necessary instructions have
been given to the BDOs, police stations and forest department. He said that the elephants have
been chased away from the borders of the district.

The DC said that a flying squad will be prepared by the forest department to address the
elephant menace and a helpline number would be issued so that information regards movement
of elephant can be received. The district administration gave Rs 10,000 as immediate
compensation to the kin of the victim to perform his last rites while another 90,000 was
deposited in the bank by the forest department.

The remaining compensation of Rs 3 lakh would be provided after completing the formalities.
