HARIDWAR: An elephant which killed a BHEL employee last week was
tranquillised and captured after a five-day operation by a joint team of
Rajaji Tiger Reserve and Haridwar forest division on Friday. According to
the forest department, the elephant has been shifted to Ravasan unit of
Rajaji where it will be observed by doctors and specialists after which it
will be sent to Chila camp where it will be trained for patrolling. The
elephant has been captured for the second time this year. Earlier, the 20-
year-old tusker was captured after it killed two people in BHEL residential
area in Haridwar. It was released into Chila range of RTR but found its way
back to BHEL residential area.
On November 14, the elephant trampled 52-year-old Virendra Singh to death.
Aakash Verma, divisional forest officer of Haridwar, said, “We tried to trap the elephant inside the forest in order to tranquilise it,
but could not succeed. We were able to trap it outside the forest area near BHEL gate which is the safest zone for capturing it.
On Friday morning, we tranquillised the elephant and captured it safely.”
Rajaji director Sanatan Sonkar said, “The elephant will be kept under observation after which it will be shifted to Chila camp
where it will be trained for patrolling.”
